Meet Marlowe: The Puppy Who Stole Our Hearts

What's your dog's name, and how did you choose it?

We named our dog Marlowe and picked it out long before she came home. I wanted something a bit unique, and I was also trying to get away from names that ended in an “ee” sound (our previous dogs were Abby, Maddie, and Molly). This was one we really liked, and my kids loved it too. My husband wasn’t sold at first, but we kept referring to our future puppy as Marlowe, and eventually it grew on him. In the end, it was the only name he liked!

The real challenge was how we were going to spell it. Marlo? Marlow?? Marlowe??? In the end, we told our breeder the name, and they wrote an email to us spelling it “Marlowe,” and that was what decided it.

Was it love at first sight, or did your bond grow over time?

It was love at first sight of a photo for me, and then for my husband it was love as soon as he met her. We had lost our last dog about a year and a half before bringing Marlowe home, and our whole family was feeling very ready for a puppy, but my husband was a bit unsure about the timing. I saw a photo of Marlowe and just knew she was exactly what we wanted. My husband and I went later that day to meet her with the kids because I didn’t want to get their hopes up if he wasn’t sold. But as soon as he met her, she won him over. I loved her right away too, but at first spent a lot of time comparing her to my last dog, who I loved so much and had such a good bond with. But over time I came to love Marlowe for all her own quirks and charms, and I find more and more I just love her for exactly who she is.

What's your happiest memory with your dog?

We recently took Marlowe to visit Point Pelee National Park here in Canada, and it was such a fun day. We loved the hike and getting to watch her experience the water, the beach, and the waves for the first time. We love to hike and explore new places, so having a dog who can join us for that was really important to us. It felt like a little glimpse of all the adventures we'll have together and made us so excited for what's to come.

What's the first thing your dog does when you come home?

Marlowe is the best at greetings. If she's not crated, she runs to greet us at the door with so much excited energy, and then she immediately rolls over for belly rubs.

What's the most expensive thing your dog has destroyed?

She ate the crotch out of a pair of my Lululemon joggers (about $150). Honestly, I feel like that's pretty good as far as puppy destruction goes. It could have been a lot worse, and I'm waiting to replace them until I feel confident she's through her chewing phase.

Oh, and she also chewed the cupholder in our vehicle. I haven't priced out that repair yet.

What's your dog's favourite thing to do?

Anything with her people. Marlowe is very people-oriented and has bonded really well with every member of our family. She is happiest when we're all together, whether that's at home or out and about.

What is your dog's biggest diva moment?

She's recently started drinking out of my bedside water glass. At first I didn't realize we were sharing! Instead of going downstairs to her water bowl when she's thirsty in the evening, she'll wander over and help herself to the glass on my nightstand. I now keep a water glass near the edge for her and my own further back where she can't reach it.

What three things are always in your dog bag?

We always have wipes for easy cleanups, a Turkish towel (it's thin, packs up small, and can be used as something to lie on or to dry wet paws), and a collapsible water bowl.

How has your dog's presence helped you get through a difficult chapter in your life?

Marlowe has only been with us for a short time, but she has brought so much joy into my life. My boys are 10 and 12 now and on the brink of adolescence. They aren't babies anymore and don't need me in the same ways they once did.

It's marked a shift in what this season of motherhood looks like for me, and Marlowe has filled a space I didn't even realize was opening up. She's my little shadow, always nearby and always up for a cuddle. Caring for her has given me a chance to pour some of that nurturing energy into something new, and I think she's made this transition feel a little softer.

Affectionate, Playful, Adaptable
